International School of Dakar

An opportunity for parents and other professionals to share their
expertise and personal career journey with ISD high school students

Thank you for your interest in participating in Career Week 2012 at International School of Dakar. This week-long event is a series of brief seminars designed to introduce ISD students to a wide variety of careers, plus what it takes to reach, and be successful in, those careers.

Career Week 2012 will be held from March 26 – 30, 2012 on the ISD high school campus.

The primary purpose of Career Week is to provide students with a realistic view of what it is like to work day-to-day in specific professions. Too often students choose college/university majors with no real knowledge of the realities of careers in that major. We hope that you will join us as a guest speaker and spend some time sharing your professional experiences with our high school students. Specifically, we need professionals willing to highlight the journey that brought them to their current professional position. Ideally, each 30-minute seminar will address the following items, but presenters are encouraged to highlight their career path however they choose. Suggested topics to address:

  • The type and level of education required for that career
  • The skills needed from beginning university to the professional skills needed now
  • Examples of the professional rewards and challenges involved with the profession
  • Specialties within the career field and/or unique opportunities/rewards that the profession provides
  • A general discussion of the typical daily schedule and responsibilities: exactly how you spend your time each day at work
  •  Question & Answer session
More information about the content of your presentation and the available media resources will be provided if you are able to accept our invitation. We will also be happy to assist you in preparing your presentation.

Job Shadowing: An optional bonus for students

While not expected of every presenter, some students are interested in the possibility of shadowing you at work, observing for a few hours as you perform your daily duties. This unique opportunity is one of the most valuable tools available to students when learning about careers and provides them with a first-hand view of the demands and responsibilities involved with your profession. This is certainly not expected of every presenter but is an added bonus for students if you are willing and your work-place allows it. If possible, these visits will be arranged in the weeks immediately following Career Week at a scheduled time convenient for both you and the student.

The ISD High School community is looking forward to another informative and thought-provoking Career Week, and we hope that you will join us and be part of the Career Week 2012 Team.

Please feel free to respond by email at schoolcounselor@isd.sn or complete the following Presenter Participation Form and return it to Sam Scoggin or Marylene Michelet in the office as soon as possible.

Thank you, we look forward to your presentation!
