Dear Parents, This week the children in the Elementary enjoyed extended art sessions making a selection of artworks with artisans. These will be on display in the gym on April 25. Next week, we have a kora player coming to share about local instruments, and he will be making instruments with some of the classes also. Of course, our classwork continues, and it was great to visit some of the classes this last week who were celebrating their recent writing creations. More on all that is coming up below... Notes: 1. Booths of Nations - April 25: We now have 13 nations represented up to date. Here are the countries:
Senegal, Spain, Malaysia, China, USA, Holland, South Africa, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, France, Australia, India, El Salvador There is still time!! Please let Mr. Gaucher know at gaucher@isd.sn if you are also interested in running a booth on that morning. 2. World Cultural Month Itinerary: The following are the coming events: - April 15-18: Traditional Instrument demonstrations in music classes - April 15: Senegalese Lunch on Grass & Dress-up - April 24: Bazaar After School - April 25: WCM Final Day 3. Senegal Day - Tuesday April 15: We are looking forward to the Senegal Day lunch under the trees on Tuesday, April 15. We hope everyone can come wearing something local. 4. Earth Day: On Tuesday April 22, ISD Elementary celebrates Earth Day. We will be working with the children to raise their awareness of sustainability; reducing our waste; recycling and reusing what we can; and generally caring for the local and worldwide environment. The theme in our second year is RECYCLE IT! Below are some of the activities - note in particular those in bold: - STUDENTS COME TO SCHOOL DRESSED IN GREEN (please!) - 8:45-11:30: Fun green activities in grades, rotating through different teachers - 11:40-12:10: Earth Day Assembly in gym - WASTE-FREE LUNCH (see below) - Green Specials sessions - Green Display in library hosted by Ms. Stephanie - You can read about the worldwide 2014 Earth Day organization here. 5. Waste-free Lunch - Tuesday April 22: The idea of Monday's waste-free lunch is to have a day when we produce no garbage. Please send your child's lunch in a reusable container, and there should be no disposable wrapping inside at all. That is the goal - nothing that will be thrown away. Here is a link to a website that might give some ideas. Shady will also be sending over only reusable materials for his lunches on Tuesday, too. 6. WAISAL Soccer on Saturday: Please do come along to the final day of the WAISAL Soccer to cheer on the Jaguars: The rumor was, I was our mascot at the spirit assembly.... I was not.7. Final Parent Workshop - Resiliency: Pam Pelliccia, our elementary counselor will present a workshop entitled; Building Resilience in Your Child on Tuesday, April 29th from 8:30 am-9:30 am in the Conference Room (2nd floor of the Administration building). The mindset of resiliency is the ability to recover from setbacks; the quality of bouncing back. Resilient people see challenges as opportunities. The workshop will combine information sharing and group discussion to identify strategies to teach your child resiliency. 8. 1/2 Day Schedule on Friday 18th: We will have a half-day schedule on Friday, for the PD afternoon. For your information this is a schedule whereby the children have all of the specials they would normally have on that day (Day 6), but a shorter version in the morning. This keeps the continuity of the specials schedule and children do not then miss a session. So if your child has PE on a regular Day 6, they still wear their PE shoes. 9. New Playground Apparatus: Here are some of our children enjoying the new apparatus on the Pre-K and KG playground: Upcoming Events: - April 10-12: WAISAL HS Soccer at ISD - April 16 & 17: Gr 4 Trip to Thies - April 18: PD Afternoon - April 21: Easter Holiday (SCHOOL CLOSED) - April 22: Earth Day - April 24: AGM - April 25: WCM Final Day - April 29: ES Parent Workshop - April 30: KG B Assembly - April 30: 2nd Annual Arts Salon - May 1: May Day (SCHOOL CLOSED) - May 2: 3C Assembly Ian Clark Ed.D.
