Elementary News: April 15

posted Apr 15, 2016, 3:45 AM by Unknown user   [ updated Apr 18, 2016, 5:53 AM ]

Dear Parents,

Next week we are celebrating Earth Day, on Friday 22nd and we have amended schedules in the morning to study sustainable topics. For the following Friday 29th, we are still looking for country booth volunteers, and there is plenty of time to sign up for the parade at the WCM Finale - we hope you can find time to come....

Notes:

1. Earth Day on April 22: We will have our Earth Day Celebration on Friday next week! The two main things for you to know are that on Friday 22nd:

 - STUDENTS COME TO SCHOOL DRESSED IN GREEN

- SEND IN A WASTE-FREE LUNCH on FRIDAY Here is a link to a website (Shady and Maria will also do a waste-free lunch that day).

Read on for more....

LET'S GROW AT ISD!!

- 8:45-11:30: Green activities in grades, rotating through different teachers
- 11:30-12:10: Earth Day Assembly in gym - we'll hand packs of seeds to the classes
- WASTE-FREE LUNCH (see below)
- Green Specials sessions
- Green Display in library
- You can read about the worldwide 2016 Earth Day organization here.

The idea of Friday's waste-free lunch is to have a day when we produce no garbage. Please send your child's lunch in a reusable container, and there should be no disposable wrapping inside at all. That is the goal - nothing that will be thrown away.

One additional thing we are doing this week is preparing the space behind the Pre-K rooms for our plants with lots of new soil.

Finally, Gr 3, 4 & 5 will experience a green-themed lesson from the HS Interact club next week - they are teaching us how to bring sustainability to our lives, and are great role models.

2. Booths & Parade on April 29: Mr. Gaucher will soon be asking for volunteers to run country booths on the 29th April (gaucherk@faculty.isd.sn) - please speak with him if you are interested. We'd like to have over 20 booths this year!

Also, if you are interested in being part of the parade of nations, or if your child would like to take part, please send back the form, or email Asiya at asiyam@faculty.isd.sn. We hope to see everyone dressed up that day, it's a lot of fun....

All parents are welcome to come, and Pre-K children can be there with their parents too, of course. We'll have the booths in the morning, and music, performances and the parade in the afternoon - more timings to follow from Mr. Gaucher.

3. Wrestling at ISD!! If you did not have a chance to come to the wrestling last week, here is a short movie of the event....

ISD Wrestling

It was a lot of fun, and I truly admire Mr. Bell for dancing when called up - I was not as brave!!

4. K-5 Communal Lunch: This was a lot of fun, as these photos from parent, Evgenia Dolina attest,

5. Annual General Meeting - April 21: Please do come along to the school's AGM. At the meeting, there will be presentations on the board surveys, awards for faculty long service plus more news on the elections. Childcare is arranged, and there will also be snacks and wine. This is in the Gym from 6:00pm. More here

6. Grade 5 Parent Workshop:  Introduction to Middle School: This will take place on Monday, April 18th at 8:30 am in the Conference Room, and led by Ms. Eileen Knobloch, Middle School Counselor and Ms. Pam, the Elementary Counselor. The discussion will focus on:

                                    Adolescent Changes

                                    The Nature of Middle School

                                    ISD Middle School

                                    Transition Support

Whether your child will be at ISD or another middle school next year, we encourage all grade 5 parents to attend this workshop to learn about what has often been called the roller coaster years

7. Summer Camp: You should have received a sign-up letter about the summer camps last week. If there is enough interest, we'll add a third week. Sign-up is with Francois in the admin office:

8. Board Elections: You will receive news about not only voting for the board elections, but as an incentive, for every vote, you may help your children have a pizza party. The class with the most parents voting will earn one, and a letter will go home today as a reminder to vote - and send in signed as proof you have voted!

Every parent has their own vote (e.g. a 2 parent family has 2 votes). For the pizza contest, only one parent’s signature on the form is needed even if both parents have voted. Only one form per child. If you have more than one child, please return a separate form for each of your children so that each child’s class will receive credit for your vote in the contest.

Voting closes April 21....
