Elementary News: August 22

Dear Parents,

Welcome new families, and welcome back returning parents and children. The year started strongly, with a lot of community-building in the first few days in all the classes. It's at this time when we talk even more about our CORE values of Creativity, Open-mindedness, Responsibility and Excellence and how the values relate to what we do in the classes.

This is the first of my posts to Elementary News. I make regular postings here, and this is one way that I communicate about upcoming events and reflecting on recent happenings in school; I'm looking forward to all that we'll be working on together this year!

Notes:

1. PTO Welcome CoffeeWe hope new parents in particular can come to the PTO Welcome Coffee on Thursday, August 28, 8:30 in the Conference Room. Alan Knobloch, Brad Bell and I will say a few words, and new parents will have a chance to pick up some useful ISD, Dakar and Senegal pointers from our PTO committee. We always need PTO volunteers.

2. Drop-off and Pick-up: A quick reminder. Please adhere to the policy of drop-off no earlier than 8:00am. There is supervision on campus for Elementary School children at the sand playgrounds only after 8:00am. Also:

- Elementary students at the playground after 3:20 must be with a parent or nanny

- Only Pre-K - 2 students are permitted to play on the sand playground after school - if supervised

- Soccer is not permitted after school (unless with Gaucher's Academy!)

- Pre-K - 5 Students are not permitted to leave campus without an adult

Thank you for adhering to these requests, as they are key to keeping our students safe.

3. "Welcome Back!"Here are some pictures from Monday. A lot of smiling faces!:

First Day of School

4. Reading with our Kids:  I mentioned a quote in the Opening Ceremony; "children are made readers on the laps of their parents" (Emilie Buchwald). I shared this because it is one of the most important roles that we have as parents that relates to our children's development in school.

ISD requests that every Elementary child either reads or is read to for at least 20 minutes a day. There is an article HERE on just this subject. CLICK HERE also, for an interesting article from Ms. Els entitled Bilingual parents: Talking to your child in your native language makes it easier for them to learn English.

5. Parent Communication: We have the following formal parent/teacher forms of communication in the Fall to keep you updated with what we are doing in the classes:

- September 18: Open House, 5:30

- October 10: K-2 Unpacking the Classroom; 3-5 Goal-Sharing Conferences 1:00-4:00

- November 19: Trimester I Report Cards go home

- November 20/21: Parent Conferences, 1:00-4:00

Please remember you can contact your teachers by email at any time to arrange a meeting. If there is something of importance, it is often better to arrange a time to talk with your child's teacher, rather than catching the teacher as the school day begins.

6. After School Activity Session Leaders Requested: Mr. Te Huki requests that parents contact him if they would like to present an After School Activity, or if they know someone from outside school who would be an interesting addition. We always appreciate new ideas. These are for the K-5 After School Activities program that will run from 3:30-4:10 from September 15.

7. Aladdin Auditions: Ms. Joy is currently auditioning any Gr 3-5 students who would like to be in the Fall production of Aladdin. If your child is in Gr 3-5 and would like to try out for a role, please ask them to arrange a time next week. Details have been shared in the Music classes.

- September 3: First PTO Meeting, 8:30am
- September 9: Board Meeting, 6:00pm
- September 15: After School Activities Begin, 3:30-4:10pm
