Dear Parents, As we end our first full week of school, we have established our routines, and all the children are well into writing, reading and looking wide-eyed at the new math topics for the year! It really is a great time to see the energy of the children moving us all forward. There are plenty of opportunities for you to come in and hear more about the school as I mention below; beginning with the PTO next Tuesday.... Notes: 1. PTO Coffee: A message from our PTO... Welcome new and returning families to ISD! Our first Coffee Hour of the school year this Tuesday, August 25 at 8:30am at Shady Shack. Stop by to chat with old friends and meet new ISD parents. We look forward to seeing you there! 3. Swimming Starts August 24: Mr. Stephen Bowler would like you to be aware that our block of swimming begins with the classes that start on Monday, August 24. Please send your child in with their swimwear for PE sessions from that date. 4. Playground Toys: Ms. Pam introduced many new playground toys for the children at recess. Here the children are getting busy with the balls, hula hoops and frisbees - Mr. Kofi showing the way with the jump rope: 5. Open House on Sept. 3: A heads-up that on September 3, running from 5:30-8:00 we have our Elementary Open House. This is an opportunity to meet all of your child's teachers, and hear information about the programs. The evening starts in the gym, and then you can choose from alternating sessions, as below: More next week.... 6. Drop-off: Another quick reminder that students should not be on campus before 8:00am. There is no campus supervision before that time, but after 8:00 we do have an assistant on duty at the playground area. 7. Jappale: Ms. Shelly will be sending out information about the Jappale drive in a few days time. Traditionally, the Gr 2 students have organized this wonderful service learning program for the many folk who help us around school - more from Gr 2 soon! 8. Gr 4-12 Swim Coaching: If you have a swimmer in Gr 4 & 5 and have arrived recently, please contact our athletics director, Eric Rodine. He will ensure that they are enroled for the swim coaching - eventually they may represent the team in a local and WAISAL tournament. 9. Screen Addiction: We use technology at ISD where appropriate, and all classes draw on ipads, desktops, laptops and Smartboards through the year. There are times, however, when too much screen time can be just too much, and I'd like to share an article from the New York Times on the subject; click HERE for the link. 10. Elementary Parent Coffee: To follow on from the PTO Coffee this week and the Open House next week, I would like to host an ES Parent Coffee on Thursday, September 10 in the Conference Room. I'll talk about upcoming events and other topics such as our new standards-based report card, the Words Their Way introduction to the school, and how we use our MAP assessments. Upcoming Events: - September 3: Elementary Open House - September 9: Gr 2-5 MAP Testing Begins - September 9: Board Meeting - September 10: ES Parent Coffee - September 14: ASA's Begin - September 18: Elementary Peace Day - September 23/24: SCHOOL CLOSED (Professional Development) - September 25: SCHOOL CLOSED (Tabaski) Ian Clark Ian Clark Ed.D.
