Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for your attendance at the conferences last week. We hope you found them informative and productive. I observed the children in classes from their first practice, through to the final run-throughs, and I felt the children grew immensely in confidence; also through reflecting on their work to date with you. This week, we enjoyed 2C's assembly - thanks Mr Carlson and class; the 4th Grade hosted the Samusocial children; and of course we had 5 days of dress up!

World Cultural Month 2013: The following events will be coming up in April for World Cultural Month:

- April 9: Assembly in gym to open the month
- April 9-16: Elementary Senegal Arts Week (artisans in Art Lessons)
- April 9-16: Artisans in residence on campus (ES classes will visit)
- April 18: Art Exhibition (in gym, come and see the results of the Art classes)
- April 18: Local Outfit Day (children invited to wear their finest!)
- April 18: Communal lunch on the grass (school will provide this)
- April 26: WCM Final Day

Please note that April 26 will feature booths of nations (you are invited to help run a booth for your nation) and a fashion show (you and your children are invited to represent your own country). I have attached a program.

School Lunch Links: I have put links to three blogs with thought-provoking articles and ideas of healthy lunches:

Spoonfed (articles on food)

"Parents" article on snacks: The Snack Epidemic

Please click HERE for next week's Shady Shack menu. There are two choices for each day, and please remember that students can only order off the menu. Also, remember that if you are sending lunch in, only Friday is French fry day :)

Spirit Week: Some strange and wonderful outfits were seen this week:

2C's Assembly: Thanks Mr. Carlson and 2C, for putting together our assembly this week. Also, thanks to our ELL students who performed a play they wrote themselves:

2C Assembly and ELL Play

Francophonie Week: The children enjoyed chocolate calligraphy, French snacks, music, games and more on the field in their French classes. Here are some photos of the "chocolate calligraphy":

Chocolate Calligraphy

The French Department writes: As part of our celebration of the 'Francophonie week', the 3rd and 4th garders students as well as some 5 and 6 students, participated in workshops called "Calligraphie en chocolat". Marcel Zaragoza, a French artist who already performed at ISD last year, ran these workshops. Students discovered, as they enjoyed drawing with the letters of the alphabet, ancient craft tools:  the pencil and the spatula.  Chocolate was the 'ink' they used to form and write letters while they enjoyed mastering the gesture of writing beautifully.
We all had a great time! The French teachers are very grateful to the PTO which has sponsored the event.

Confirm Your 2013-2014 Plans: As with all international schools, we need to know who will be returning for the 2013-2014 school year to confirm places to new applicants - we are already meeting with prospective 2013-2014 families. KG, and Grs 2, 3 & 5 are currently at or close to capacity for the 2013-2014 school year. The $500 Returning Student Deposit is due no later than 1 May, 2013. If you haven't done so already, please get that in as soon as possible, so we can make sure your student(s) are on our class lists for next year. Our admissions department will be in touch throughout April reminding you to submit your Returning Student Deposit.

Photo Competition: Details below!!!

Field Day: During the day's activities, which run from 10:30 through 3:20 on 28 March, the K-5 children will recite their team songs, meet in the gym for an assembly, and head off for fun around the field - more from Mr. Te Huki soon. Parents are welcome to come and watch. Pre-school children will have their own Field Day in the morning with Ms. Chris!

A Request: While I know this is difficult to follow-up on, please speak with your nannies and drivers and encourage them to be as proactive as possible at the playground after school regarding chasing, pushing and throwing sand. It is OK for children to be playing here after school if supervised by their nanny or driver.

Upcoming Events This Term:

- March 28: Elementary Field Day
- March 29: Good Friday and 1st day of Spring Break
- April 8: 1st Day of Spring Term
