Dear Parents,

To begin, thank you from the staff to the many of you who prepared food and served at the Staff Appreciation Lunch. We look ahead to our K-2 and 3-5 Concerts this week - thanks Ms. Joy for all the preparation! In addition, many of our Gr 2-5 students will be at Lycee Mermoz taking their DELF exams - more on that below....

Notes:

1. Spring Concerts: A final note to confirm the concerts will be next week, on the Secondary School Amphitheater at the following times:

- K-2: Performance begins at 6:00pm on Wednesday May 21

- 3-5: Performance begins at 6:00pm on Thursday, May 22

All students must attend their class performances, as this is part of the curriculum. They'll need to go home to get smartly dressed, and be here by 5:45pm. There will be snacks kindly provided by the PTO afterwards.

Gr 3-5 students will be taking their Art Portfolios home after the Wednesday concert. They will pick them up at the Board Room.

Pre-K 3 and 4 classes will be inviting parents to attend an informance in an upcoming music class, so you can see how the Music class works.

2. DELF Exam: May 21, 29 of our Gr 2-5 students will take part in the DELF Prim. This is coordinated by our French team, and students are to be picked up afterwards from Lycee Mermoz. DELF Prim and DELF Junior are official diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education to certify the proficiency in French as a Foreign Language of children aged 8 to 12 for DELF prim and 12 to 18 for DELF Junior. In Senegal, the French Institute has the responsibility to organize these exams. A purpose of this is to reward our children with his/her first diploma of French. The DELF certificate also will allow your child to opt out for a French university's language entrance exam if he/she got the B2 diploma.

3. TCK* Parent Presentation - an invite:

Third Culture Kids - A Presentation for Parents

Monday, May 26, 8:30AM - 9:30AM HS Music Room - 2nd Floor**

Parents are invited to attend an assembly of students in Grade 10 English presenting autobiographical essays answering the following prompt: Write about being a TCK.

Think of a moment when you realized you were unsure of who you were or who you were supposed to be.  How did you resolve this question?  Or did you?  How did this moment affect who you are today? Several were selected and spliced together.

The Grade 10 students will present their own stories as theatrical monologues.

* Third Culture Kid: someone who spends a significant number of their developmental years outside of their passport country.

** There will be tea & coffee!!

4. MAP Reports: These will be going home shortly, and as before, this is a useful link to more information. Note in particular the Lexile level, which is written about in more detail, and could guide you in selecting just right reading books.

5. Grade 3-5 Quiz: The Student Council have requested I give an early mention about a Gr 3-5 Quiz Night. This will run from 4:00-5:00 on Friday, June 6. There will be plenty of posters to follow, I am sure.

6. Elementary School Summer Camp: We will be sending out the sign-up forms for the Summer Camp to those who responded to the interest survey, shortly.

7. Ms. Melinda's Class Assembly: Here are some snaps of Ms. Melinda's class assembly. We learned a lot about our letters:

8. Parent Book Group 2014-15 Survey: During the 2014-2015 school year parents will be invited to participate in a book group that meets 3 times at 8:30am to discuss a parenting book of their choosing. In order to assist parents who prefer to buy a hard copy of the book this summer, we are sending the survey out now.  In September, parents new to our community will be invited to join the book group. If you are interested in participating in the book group, kindly complete the survey by May 30. Thank you for your interest in the Parent Book Group.  Pam Pelliccia, ES Counselor

9. Staff Appreciation Lunch: The school staff would like to express their thanks for the lunch that was provided by many of you. Many of the students in the ES also sent on their thanks to the staff in the form of cards.

10. Earth Day Plants are Flourishing: At the Earth Day Assembly, we saw a lot of plants that the classes had been caring for. They were destined for the wall opposite Pre-K 4 classes, and now with the help of painted rocks they are growing nicely.
