Dear Parents,

This was another busy week, with assemblies and much more. Please do note the request for recyclables below, as we try to become a greener ISD. A lot happening next week also, with field trips and class parties - thanks for all you are doing to facilitate these....

Notes:

1: Recycle Plastics: Don't forget to sort your trash!!! There is a large bin at the entrance ready for rinsed out plastics that will be collected and recycled - LET'S HELP THE ENVIRONMENT!! Thanks to those HS students running it, and to ISD's Faculty Green Team for getting it off the ground:

2. Paper Airplane Contest: Preparation for this has the campus buzzing and awash with paper (all recycled):

Thanks to Mr. Guillaume in the MS for organizing.

3. Transitions - From Ms. Pam: Many of our children's sense of home may be very different to ours as we grew up; they may be in a second country and also a different educational system to their home country. Your children may be part of a group that some term "3rd culture children", and this may be something you have thought of in the past. Here are a few sites that you might find interesting: It's about helping kids thrive during transitions.  I plan to include the website in the revised brochure I hand out next year (this year's has already been distributed): http://www.thecultureblend.com/?p=1056

And then there is this one about expats left behind: http://www.thecultureblend.com/?p=1482

Here are two other links you may find useful that I have shared previously:

TCKWorld.com     Interactionintl.org     http://www.ori-and-ricki.net/ (this one is also for kids)

I have added Pam's letter again - attached at the bottom of the blog....

4. ES Swimming Ending Soon: The last day of swimming will be Friday June 6. Children should not bring their costumes - unless they are having a class pool party!

5. Disco Time!: A chance for the Gr 3 - 5 to wear their "disco suit" - whatever that may be...:

6. BIG Party: During trimester II and III a big brother/big sister program called BIG, was initiated by grade 10 student Sona Sadio Thangui, coordinated by ES counselor Pam Pelliccia and supervised by US teachers Maryelle Faye & Laliya Ba. There were 21 Upper School students who volunteered each Thursday afternoon to help 18 elementary school children with their homework, reading and social skills. Over 200 community service hours were earned and volunteered for the program. Here are some pictures of a pizza party held on May 21 to celebration the success of the program - thanks to all who assisted in the program:

7. Pre-K 3 Assembly: We loved hearing Ms. Marje's class sing about all different types of transport. Here they are performing:

8. 3G Assembly: We all enjoyed the 3C assembly where the theme was ONE and how we can help others feel better about themselves:

9. ASA Assembly: We had so many great performances in our recent ASA assembly, and here are some pictures:

10. 3C Publishing Party: After their assembly Mrs. Clark's class entertained their parents and guests with their informational books:

11. Library Book Returns: Ms. White informs me that the deadline for book returns is June 1. Please have any borrowed books back in the library by that date.

12. HS Can Crushers: There is now a box at the gate for recycling ALL metal cans. Please send them in and don't throw in your trash at home! This is a HS-inspired project from Alain, Nicolas and Enno!

Dear Parents,

We are a group of students who are engaging in a community service project. We are collecting all sorts of cans to recycle. As a part of our numerous endeavorswe would like students to bring cans from home to school and drop them in one of the recycling bins (next to the monitor at the entrance). We will then clean, crush and store the collected cans at ISD. Parents please encourage your children to participate, and students, participate in the project yourself! Doing this will save the environment and create jobs for people in Senegal.

Thank you in advance,

The Can Crushers (Alain, Nicolas and Enno)
